Hooray! 1/2 Way !! Day 25 Pierre to Chamberlain
This was the most exciting moment out here on the road today. We crossed the half-way point in our cross country trek on our bicycles. This spot was 23 miles east of Pierre, South Dakota. We had just finished a long hill, climbing 300' in 1 mile. A leg awakening hill so early in the morning! As you can see it is really desolate and clear out here in the plains. This was before 8:00 AM this morning, Thursday, July 13, 2006. It is hard to believe we have come this far already.
Chuck Delaney from Cincinnati, Ohio was traveling with me the whole route today. As you can see on the far right is a van. This was our first SAG stop today. We loaded up with some bananas, filled the water bottles again and took off after about a 4 minute break. Only two others were ahead of us. We were really ripping along this morning on our 85 mile route headed to Chamberlain, SD. We passed a few other cyclists on this section. There were 10 traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail from Oregon to St Charles, MO. They too had their own SAG vehicle and saw it pulled along side the road a little further past this point. Also seen in this photo is a building that looks like a barn. It is the only "store" around this area. Next one wasn't until another 30 miles down the road.
