This was on the way UP the mountain pass, hwy 22 that leads over Teton Pass. Steep 10% grade for about 6 miles non-stop. It was a tough one, everyone was going slow and steady. I stopped to rest a few times and took some movies along the way.
There just isn't anything more magnificent than the Grand Tetons. I was riding with Chuck during this stretch coming out of Jackson Hole. He had told me he CLIMBED over the Grand Teton back in 1976. That moutain is the highest at about 13,000' - and it is the one in the middle of the photo. It took him two days to hike over that mountain with ropes and a guide carrying all his overnight gear and food.
A little wayside rest stop along the way. That's Tom who is on the ABB staff and I standing along side. It was about 7:00 AM in the morning. On Independence Day, July 4th.
It was a total of 15 miles of steady climbing to reach this Togwatee Pass and then the Continental Divide at 9,658 feet. It was cool up here but we didn't stay cool for long as the temperature was about 88 degrees by the time we rolled down the other side of the pass into Dubois, WY. We were all wearing our official AmericaByBicycle shirts today to celebrate July 4. When we arrived in Dubois we saw a town parade. LOTS and LOTS of horses and REAL cowboys everywhere in this small town out in the middle of nowhere. The town was really alive with all the local ranchers and cowboys and cowgirls and cowhands coming in to the local festivities. What a ride, what a day!
